From Boris with Love

So it’s been a while and the weather hasn’t helped, but at long last I have once again ventured out with my trusty Boris bike key in hand.

My latest victim goes by the name of Victoria, who to her misfortune found herself sitting next to me at a dinner party earlier this week. Having only arrived on the train from Scotland a few hours earlier, Victoria didn’t know what a Boris bike was, let alone that a mere few hours later she would be riding on the back of one trying to consume a toasted cheese and tomato ciabatta. Although an entirely unexpected date, I can honestly say it was one of the better ones (or as Victoria puts it, “the most mind blowingly awesome date you have ever been on”) and that I haven’t laughed so much in quite some time. But don’t take my word for it, let’s see what she had to say about it all:

How did you meet Pj?
I was with a friend at a surprise birthday party for someone I didn’t know. It went a little something like this:
“Hi, I’m Victoria”
“Hi, I’m Pj”
“What, like Pj and Duncan?”

Funniest moment
Pj repeatedly demanding that I keep my legs open while he was trying to cycle me home on the back of one of those bikes. What a gent.

Would you go on another date with Pj and if so, what would you do?
I’d see him again, but the chances of us going on another ‘date’ are slim as I live in a different country. If he came to Scotland, I’d take him fishing. Well, I’d drop him off and pick him up once he’d finished.

Pj is the best guy I’ve met in London, although considering I only knew him for a few hours I could be completely wrong. He might be a complete tosser. Either way, thanks for sharing your bed and sorry for leaving the milk out!

Now originally I had said I didn’t want to be mentioned on this here blog but in his cunning way PJ
was able to get around that by giving me creative control of the content – plus it meant he didn’t
have to do it himself….lazy with a capital L me thinks!

Firstly let me say he earned points for creativity with his cycle idea even before the date had begun
which is lucky because they were quickly deducted when he was ‘fashionably late’. Lateness
aside….it was a pretty damn good date. The actual cycling part didn’t get underway until many a
wine was drunk which probably wasn’t an ideal mix seeing as I hadn’t ridden a bike in almost a year – although I can now claim to be the first of PJs dates to almost mow him down.

Our drink induced cycling lead us to Soho where cocktails were in order as was a bit of a boogie. PJ was so focused on impressing me with his dance moves that he didn’t notice the thief nicking his beloved coat – to be fair neither did I, which could mean one of two things; either I was too mesmerised by his killer moves OR the cocktails were clouding my vision. Probably the cocktails were clouding my vision so much that I THOUGHT PJ had cool moves and thus I was distracted from the robbery taking place right under our noses. Either way his coat was gone.

Luckily he wasn’t one to dwell and let it ruin the night – we kicked on; ran into a few of his random mates, made fun of two lads lurking about the club entrance hoping for a drunken pickup, ate a pizza and then cursed the Boris bike scheme for making us run (yes I was actually running!) around the whole city looking for bike stations that actually had bikes (that worked) in them. The delight at finally finding some is indescribable….unfortunately for the residents of inner city London this was also the moment I discovered the bikes bell! A musical treat was bestowed upon the city’s streets well into the night. We paid for our drunken school night antics the following day – but I think it was worth it, good times!

I’m reluctant to call this one a date, so we’ll call it half-a-date. Both the physical and mental trauma I have suffered as a result of meeting with Rebecca will haunt me for the rest of my life. There was once a time when I believed that a woman could not overpower a man. That was until I met Rebecca.

In retrospect I suppose I’m kind of lucky. Lucky in that I have such great work colleagues that none of them would consider creating a dedicated Spotify playlist named ‘Pj is up to his neck in it’ if one of their much loved colleagues were to arrive to work covered in love bites. No wait a second, that’s exactly what they did.

I won’t get into the intricacies of what happened on our date, but let it be known that I was a victim. Next time a girl suggests we go back to mine to watch a movie I will definitely think twice.

It’s been a month now since I first ventured out on a Boris bike date, and if you thought it was my last you’d be wrong; I’m just a lazy bastard and haven’t had a chance to update this blog until now.

"OK Pj, let's get this shit over with..."

My second date was a date with a twist. It just so conveniently happened that TFL were running a competition, challenging members of the public to submit their videos of the most creative use of the new Boris bikes for a chance to win £1000. It seemed like fate had struck – how could it be anything else? How could anyone possibly have a more creative use for these bikes than ‘Boris bike dating’? The answer is they couldn’t. Or so I thought.

Despite a lovely video date with Frances (my opinion not hers), it turns out we didn’t win, but our entry was highly commended and if you want to see the final cut then you can head on over to The Barbican on 16 October for a chance to watch it on the big screen.

Meanwhile I have also been on a date with Lucy who has specifically requested not to appear on this blog. Don’t worry Lucy, this paragraph is all you’re getting, but read the rules next time.

Last but not least, I’ve also been on a second date with Hayley, who so far tops the tables for the best Boris bike date contestant, though this is hardly an accomplishment given that I’ve only been on four dates and two of them were with her.

Date 1: Hayley

Well, as it turns out Katie wasn’t my first date; Hayley was. If you’re reading this Katie, I’m afraid you’ve got a lot to live up to! Hayley’s got some bitchin’ bike moves and wasn’t the slightest bit phased by the prospect of embarking on a bicycle adventure with me in the pissing rain. She’s clearly also an accomplished back seat passenger, as I discovered after we concluded that we only really needed one bike between us.

Owing to my awful hangover I’m going to keep this review short, but suffice to say it was an unexpectedly fun-filled evening and I’d like to think there’ll be an opportunity for a rematch in the future. Unfortunately I have no pictures to share so you’ll have to use your imagination to visualise the highlights of the date:

Cycling from Baker St to Soho in terrential rain
Paying a toilet attendant £1 to help dry me
Several jaeger bombs, tequilas and an Americana pizza
Karaoke, ballroom dancing and a close encounter with the five-0

True story, and I’m going to prove it’s true by taking you – yes YOU! – on a bike date with ME! What could be more pleasurable than exploring London on a bicycle whilst simultaneously getting to know a complete stranger? Probably a fair few things in fact, but not enough for me to think I’m wasting my time here.
